Two new magazines and a competition – get writing!

404 Ink is relaunching its magazine 404 with new project officer Imogen Stirling, and is looking for submissions of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry on the theme Space. This what they say about that:

Issue 5 will be released in July 2019 and will be based on the theme of Space. We’re seeking interpretations as vast as the galaxy itself. What comes to mind when you think of Space? Another realm? Personal boundaries? How to take up your space? We can’t wait to hear your ideas.

To get you thinking, we’d suggest keywords of science, boundaries, existence and mystery. But feel free to let your imagination run riot!

The deadline is 24 February. I can’t see a time so I’d err on the safe side and get your entry in before close of business or, better still, the day before! As well as the story/poem/essay they ask for a fifty word bio, something I always have trouble with, both reading and writing. I’d suggest reading as many good ones as possible before writing yours, and be careful if you decide to write about yourself in the third person, people often go horribly wrong when doing that. There is nothing wrong with ‘I’.
They also accept unsolicited manuscripts for whole books, check out their submissions page for information on both opportunities.

Red Squirrel Press are starting a magazine for short story writers in March, and looking for submissions, deadline January 31. Here are their submission guidelines:

Submissions should be sent as email attachments to colinwill60@gmail.com . They should be text only; no illustrations or sound files. Contact details, including address and email, with a short relevant biography, should be sent in the covering message. Submissions can come from authors or their agents.

Submissions must be the original work of the author. Stories must not have been published before, either in print or in digital form. This includes
websites, blogs or social media.
There is a limit of 1000 to 2000 words, not including title.

Stories should be submitted in .doc or .docx formats only. No other formats will be accepted.
They should be set in 12 point Times New Roman, double-spaced, A4. Pages should be numbered.
Author’s name and word count should be given at the foot of the last page.
Submissions deadlines are: end December for the March issue, and end June for the September
issue.

The editor’s decision is final. No correspondence can be entered into.

The Wirral Poetry Festival has an open poetry competition: deadline Friday 22 March at 23:59. This is pretty much all I could find out about it, revisiting the website I can’t even find where I saw the time for the deadline, but you’ll probably do better. Find them here.
